2017 festival call-out now open!
October 3, 2016
YAH is now on the hunt for artists and ideas for the 2017 festival – hitting Canberra from 5-9 April!
You Are Here is a free five-day curated festival of independent and experimental arts in the Canberra CBD. Popping up in shopfronts, alleyways, cafes, streets, car parks, galleries, museums, cars and pretty much any place you can think of.
The festival is created from an open callout – we’re open to new people, ideas and works. We want to support emerging arts practice – emerging artists, disciplines, ideas and communities. And while we primarily feature ACT-based artists and creative communities, we want to hear from you, no matter where you call home. What we want to see is commitment to an idea; a demonstration that you are interrogating your ideas, challenging yourself and your audiences – asking how we might do and see in new ways.
What are we looking for?
Theatre, dance, visual art, music, spoken word, sculpture, digital and cross-disciplinary projects. You name it, we’re interested! We want work that’s experimental, cross disciplinary, and collaborative. Push your practice, your art form, the way you present your work, or what you’re responding to. And tell us how you’re doing it.
And if you’re into lists:
We love people who are committed to their practice, who are open to new ideas, people and collaborations, and can’t help but think outside the box;
We want to see artists thinking about what is compelling, playful, political;
We’re keen for works and ideas that engage specifically with the urban landscape of Civic and surrounds – we want you to take us to some hidden places;
Events and ideas that explore themes around our relationship to ourselves, each other and our social, physical and historical surrounds;
We welcome works from Indigenous artists
We’re also looking for events/projects that:
Propose, or are open to collaborations,
Are designed for small audiences, or one-on-one between audience and artist,
Are site specific – in the city, the suburbs, or beyond (think Namadgi and beyond!),
Are focused around laneways in the CBD
Are not just IRL, but digital. Think about the possibilities of work that exists online, or across physical and digital platforms,
Accessible to people who have a disability
Involve or arise from a residency
What do we offer?
If you’re accepted into the festival, there’s a couple of things coming your way.
First off – we’ll pay you. It might not be a huge amount, but we’re committed to paying our artists. We also offer support in terms of marketing and production, to help you focus on the project itself. And we can offer curatorial support as well, helping you develop the work in the lead up to the festival.
Who are we looking for?
You! We’re keen to support established and emerging artists, and to see just what can be mixed in with experimental arts. Have an experimental concept you’ve never had a space to explore? Get in touch and tell us about your ideas (we’re always up for chats over coffee, email, skype or phone!).
If you have wicked or wild idea – tell us! We’ll probably love it. And if you’re just keen to be involved, we still want to hear from you!
What are you waiting for? Apply here. The deadline for applications is midnight on Sunday 30 October!
We can make a screen reader accessible version of this form available to you on request – just send us an email to firstname.lastname@example.org
