Canberra has a history. We don’t talk about it much, but it’s all here: utopian visions, prohibition, murders, scandals, political protests. Things happen here.
For this project I have delved into Canberra’s historical records, pulled out some interesting moments, and turned them into letters that will be left around the city. If you see one, open it! It’s for you.
Before I managed to find my way to art school, I spent several years studying history. I thought those years were a youthful misstep before finding the ‘true me’, but unexpectedly history and art have intertwined in my work. I am particularly interested in the interaction of place and history; if I start painting a landscape then I must see the journals of the explorers and settlers who were there before me.
Since completing my studies in Adelaide and Canberra, I have held six solo exhibitions. I am based in Canberra and work out of my studio at ANCA Dickson.
