What have you learnt from other activists? What have you read that transformed you? Can you maintain hope without optimism? Join Demos Journal for an experimental cross-disciplinary multimedia conversation on activism, politics, and art. The project will make the journey from story-share to mural, finishing off with a zine-making workshop – contributing to the ever-changing community archive of activism in Canberra.
Launched in 2015, Demos is a Canberra-based journal of politics, poetry, and ideas; a journal of democracy in a changing climate. We emerged out of progressive campaigns in Canberra which were together searching for a space where people could imagine a different kind of politics – a politics as if people mattered. To date, we have published five online issues on themes such as resistance, borders, and silence, featuring work by some of Canberra’s most exciting emerging writers and artists. We also organise events with local artists, activists, and writers, and run masterclasses on subjects such as refugee politics that aim to share knowledge between the academy and the activist community.
